Eligibility

To be eligible to become a Canadian citizen, you must:

To be eligible as an adult, since becoming a permanent resident, you should be physically in Canada for 1,095 days in the five years before you apply. It is always best to apply after you have accumulated more days than you think for a stronger application.

You also need to make sure you have filed your taxes for the last three tax assessment years, if you are required to.

You should likewise have the capacity to (except if you are 55 years or more at the time of application):

  • communicate (talk and comprehend) in English or French and
  • show, in English or French, information about Canada and the duties and privileges of citizenship

You may not be qualified for citizenship if you:

  • have a criminal record
  • are dealing with criminal indictments in or outside Canada
  • have been ordered to leave Canada
  • have been denied Canadian citizenship in view of distortion
  • have had your Canadian citizenship repudiated
  • have not met the terms and states of your permanent resident status

If you’re 18 to 54 years of age on the day you sign your application, you need to take the citizenship test.

You will also need to display your knowledge of either English or French, this may mean that you will have to take an approved English/ French test such as the International English Language Testing System (“IELTS”).
